Long Semadoh is about 120 kilometers from the nearest town, Lawas. It is connected by timber road and to go there you have to use 4 wheel drive. This place is in a valley far in the highlands of Sarawak. Its beautiful environment, untouched by pollution is one of the most peaceful place on earth.
WANT TO MAKE YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT? If you want to make some bamboo musical instruments, its all in my book. With the purchase of "Masyarakat Lun Bawang" book, the measurements for the instruments are there. You can produce the flute or bass yourself.
THE BAMBOO BAND
The Lun Bawang tribe is found in the state of Sarawak, within the federation of Malaysia. Sarawak is on the island of Borneo. This tribe was formerly animist until three missionaries from Australia came and brought the Good News. Now they are members of the Evangelical Church of Borneo.
The Lun Bawang tribe loves music and the instruments they used are made of bamboo.Sometimes as many as 100 persons will form a band called BAMBOO BAND.Popular music are from the hymns. During the Lun Bawang Festival, as many as 8 bamboo bands will join the parrade and the competition.
The bamboo musical instruments comprise flutes and bass. The flutes are made in such a way that most of the notes are played. The same to the bass.In order to play the instruments, the children are asked to practise to acquire the necessary skills- the girls will play the flutes while the boys the basses. The bamboo for these instruments are taken from the nearby forest and after being cut, will be dried in the sun for a few days to get the green colour out. Then the bamboo for the flutes are bored accordingly using red hot nail. The notes can follow standard pitch etc. The basses comprise of different sizes based on what notes it is for. Details of this can be read in a book entitled "Masyarakat Lun Bawang Sarawak" priced at RM15.00, which can be bought from DBP or ordered from this site.
The origin of the use of bamboo as musical instrument was from the Kalimantan side of the border. It was then introduced by some Lun Bawang(Lun Dayeh)evangelists to their relatives in Sarawak. With the assistance of 2 indonesians ( Pantulusang - among the Lun Bawangs and Paul- among the Kelabits)the bamboo band was first played in 1940's. More creative local musicians reshape the instruments notably the basses instruments from 1970's onwards . More musical notes and pitch can be played as a result. You really have to be talented to master the flutes and blowing the basses.
